Familia Romana: Learning Latin Through Immersion
Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Pars I – Familia Romana, written by Danish linguist Hans Orberg, teaches Latin via the Natural Method. The course contains no English; rather, the student learns Latin through context, illustrations, and helpful Latin hints contained in the margin. Each chapter follows the life of a Roman family living in the 2nd century A.D. Students quickly become involved in the characters, which helps further their learning.
Capitula (chapters) are divided into two or three sections, followed by Grammatica and Pensa (Exercises). Grammar concepts are taught thoroughly. The diligent student will reach an intermediate to high-intermediate level in Latin and encounter classical Latin authors toward the end of the course. After this course, which is taught in three parts, the student will be very well equipped to read classical Latin authors.
Magistra: Christine Vergare
